This is a truly excellent piece. The only disagreement I have with my teacher HK is his view on Putin’s insufficient understanding of the U.S. I think that HK underestimated Putin on this regard. If one reads Putin's September 11, 2013 oped in New York Times on Syria (“A Plea for Caution From Russia”), one may see that Putin understands the U.S. much better than the other way around.
