-學名：Lagerstroemia indica是一種小喬木，原產中國，是一種適應性強的長壽樹種。花期長，所以又有「百日紅」之稱。紫薇在中國已經有幾千年的栽培史，唐朝時就盛植於長安宮廷之中。近幾個世紀被引種到世界各地，西方人從印度發現這種樹，因此法語稱其為「印度丁香」（lilas des Indes）。
