Prince von Kaunitz-Rietberg 1711 –1794. Foreign Minister of 40 years for Empress Maria Theresa. He embodied the essence of "balance of power" in the 18th century Europe characterized by flexible alliances and pragmatic, rather than ideological, diplomacy. The title of prince did not denote royal birth but rather an aristocratic rank above that of duke in recognition of his extraordinary feat in diplomacy.
